This is one of my favorite breakfast treats! The bread literally caramelizes and it is so delicious! I think this would be a great Christmas morning breakfast since you basically make it the night before and then put it in the oven the next morning. If your grocery store doesn’t have texas toast, you can use homemade bread, but make sure you cut the slices a little thicker than normal.
Creme Brulee French Toast
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1 loaf texas toast bread
5 eggs
1 1/2 cups half and half
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
In a small saucepan melt butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup over medium heat until smooth, stirring occasionally. Pour mixture into a large, greased jelly roll pan (18x13x1 in). Spread to cover surface. Place 12 slices of Texas toast bread in a single layer to cover pan (I have to cut some of the slices in half in order to make the bread fit). Mix together eggs, cream, salt, and vanilla. Pour mixture over each piece of bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Remove from pan and serve. If not serving immediately, turn each slice of bread over (this will prevent bread from sticking to the bottom of the pan). Serve with butter and syrup. Makes 12 servings.
History: I got this recipe from my mother in law, Cindy.
